Smoke Detectors

However, at night individuals will usually be sleeping and will be unaware of smoke. It is imperative that smoke detectors are attached to ceilings and walls of a home. It is great idea to have two or more smoke detectors. There should be at least one on each level of a home. This includes the basement level of homes. Many individuals also place one near each bedroom. The batteries in smoke detectors should be checked occasionally and replaced.

Wiring and Combustibles
The wiring in homes must be evaluated for safety to prevent fires. This includes checking electrical cords of appliances, electronics, lamps and other objects. Frayed cords can create an electrical spark that causes clothing, draperies, paper or furniture to begin burning. In addition, do not overload electrical outlets with too many cords. This can also cause a fire due to electrical sparks. Avoid have combustible items near wires, appliances, electronics, heat sources and candles. Combustible items include paper, cardboard, clothing, draperies, gasoline and others.

Heat Sources
Maintain the heating systems throughout a home to avoid fires. Fireplaces and chimneys should be properly cleaned of soot each year. Individuals must make sure that the damper is open before starting a fire in a fireplace. Always use a fire screen in front of the fireplace to prevent sparks from entering a room. Do not have carpeting, rugs or other combustibles near the fireplace. Only responsible knowledgeable adults should use a fireplace. Gas, oil, electric and wood heaters must be cleaned, and have new filters installed frequently. Excessive dust should be removed from ductwork throughout the home. Small space heaters should have an emergency shutoff feature when they are accidentally tipped over. Never place blankets, clothing, or other combustibles near a heating source.

Candles, Lighters and Cigarettes
Decorative candles should only be lit, and used by responsible adults. The candles should be in a protective device specifically for candles. Lit candles should not be near draperies, carpeting, clothing, furniture or other combustibles. Do not leave lit candles unattended. Make sure the candles cannot be knocked over by pets or children. Teach everyone in the home the stop, drop to the ground, and roll to smother flames technique for clothing fires. If you are a smoker, then use caution concerning cigarettes and cigars. Make sure the hot ashes, cigars, or cigarettes are placed in fireproof containers. Do not smoke while in bed or reclining on sofas. Individuals often fall asleep, and drop the lit cigarette on furniture starting a fire. Do not leave matches or lighters where children can find them. Children often will play with these items causing a fire in the home.
